2007: Tiger Dissed Vick For ‘Waiting’ To Apologize

Ryan Ballengee at the excellent golf blog WaggleRoom.com finds ESPN video of Tiger Woods criticizing Michael Vick in 2007 for waiting too long to apologize to the public about his dogfighting operation.

Tiger Woods Dissed Vick In 2007 For Waiting To Apologize

“If you made that big a mistake, you’ve got to come out and just be contrite, be honest and just tell the public that ‘I was wrong.’”

“Waiting a long time got a lot of people polarized. … If he would have come out earlier, he would’ve diffused a little more of it.”

In case you think that’s actually an SNL script, there’s video of Woods making the comments after the jump - plus a very interesting new tidbit about Woods caddy Steve Williams.

Ballengee also has more on Williams. As part of the recent interview Woods did for Australian TV, the ASSOCIATED PRESS noted:

“We talk about anything and everything together,” Woods said.

Williams told interviewer Murray Deaker he and Woods had a relationship that was “just like a marriage really.”

“The longer you go on, the more you know about one another,” Williams said.

Williams has gone on the record now twice vehemently denying that he knew anyting about Woods’ multiple affairs.

What Vick did was criminal, Woods’ infidelity is immoral, not a criminal act. You cannot compare the two.

Bill Plaschke writing in the LA Times indicates that Woods was obviously using performance enhancing drugs at least as long ago as last year. He describes Woods as looking more like Barry Bonds than the old Tiger. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-plaschke16-2009dec16,0,2923714.column

when there is that much fame and money to be gained, of course drug use has a great chance of being used by athletes.

kids in high school use performance enhancing drugs. IN HIGH SCHOOL!!!

do you really believe that a guy like tiger would shy away from drug use with all that fame and money available to him?

and looking at how tiger is built, i am not surprised, what a loser this guy is being shown to be.

a liar, a fraud, a coward,,,if you want to sleep around with all that trash, THEN DONT GET MARRIED AND HAVE KIDS YOU LOSER!

The cost of a golf ticket does not include a morals clause. Just like the position of being a state or Federal Senator does not include a morals clause.

We pay him to golf. He does that extremely well. What he does after that is none of our business.

@ Bar None and Anonymous - I see hwere you guys are coming from, but to me, i just think immoral and illegal are tow different things. Yes Woods is somewhat hypocritical, but i think what he said about Vick was about him (Vick) addressing the criminal actions he was a part of, and then he can move on with his career. Everything Tiger has done wrong is between him, his family and the litany of hoes he’s ran through.

Why are people calling him a fraud? Because he wasn’t nearly as perfect in his personal life as in his golf career? He is human after all, like the rest of us, and makes mistakes like the rest of us. Granted, he kind of has all this coming for cheating on his wife. And he probably lied because this is really a personal matter between him and his wife, not him and the nosy, get-a-life-public. And I wouldn’t call him a coward since he did come with the truth NOT LONG after the accident. I think “Respect” says it well. Peace.

Tiger Woods has dissappointed anyone that watched him that has a contience. He makes $10 mil a year PLAYING golf, he makes $90 mil a year on his IMAGE. If he continues to play golf, and I am sure he will, his income will probably drop to a total of $10-$25 mil a year including limited endorsements, because his image created a big marketing opportunity for the corporate world. Now he is tarnished goods the big Corporate money will go away, the purses will decrease and the PGA players will make less money. Simple economics. The PGA built a brand on one player and he shit the bed on them…

Tiger Woods is NOT tarnished. The people who dropped him, did so because of pressure not because of his image. His image was purely about the sport. had they signed him because he had kids or because of his wife then you have an argument. oh yea and the wrong kid died

Tiger’s contract has a two clauses, one for morals and one for sanity….the morals has been trashed…but Tiger, ever the entertainer, said that the Sanity Clause would not be coming to his house this Christmas…oh, that Tiger….I laughed and laughed

is the argument here that woods is a hypocrite because he’s saying that vick should have apologized and yet he himself has not?

if so, then whoever is making that argument should take note of the fact that tiger has apologized several times in his official statements and has directly taken responsibility for his actions and admitted that he was wrong to behave in such a way.

the hypocrisy argument doesn’t hold water.

Only naivete would lead one to look at this circumstance and slap on the “he’s a golfer only” blinders and try to run with it - not even Tiger’s PR guys think that will fly……

They are clearly dead in the water for some reason (I can think of many)….

From a PR standpoint, it’s a failure to let “the public” develop their opinions without input from all sides involved - there’s no unringing that bell.

Whether what Woods did was legal or not, people judge other people. Most golf is played by people with more disposable income than the average person. It is still somewhat of a country club sport, like tennis. The people marketing to these folks are going to pay attention when their cash cow looks like a lying cheating husband TWELVE times over.
A sleeve of 3 Nike One golf balls costs $15! (lost on one hole)
    The Nike Saquatch Driver $400-500!!
A round of golf at Torry Pines (a municipal Golf Course)$200.00
A ticket to the Masters is impossible to get unless you are royalty.
What Tiger did was look like your average lowlife NBA punk, not a PGA professional. That is the marketing problem…
A good leather basketball costs around $60 (the shoes can set you back another hun…), you go to the playground with your friends and play for free…
you are selling to a whole different demographic.

Golf is a mental game. Can Tiger muster the mental toughness to overcome all the negativity when he comes back on tour. If he can and eclipses Jack 18 major record then everybody including Accenture will be back on Tiger’s bandwagon again, although it may cost Accenture 30% more to get back on. Tiger should not be compared to Vick and OJ.

Why has nobody commented that maybe his wife was BORING! And He tried to stay in that BORING marriage. But then it just became a shell to have children. “moral” people will not have children without marriage. Maybe she was his baby machine. We don’t know anything about her. Fascinates me how people assume she is “sweet.” Maybe too sweet and pure got him in this situation. Nothing wrong with a man liking “trash.” He should just marry it then so he can have fun at home too. Spoken from the mouth of a hot babe. He could have married me and I would have let him do WHATEVER he wanted. Just come home.

How disappointing at the depravity of some of these skanky low-life remarks. Tiger is paid on ALL those endorsements because of the IMAGE he ATTEMPTED to CREATE FOR HIMSELF - of great athlete, squeaky-clean husband and father, family man, etc. Go back and READ and WATCH some of those interviews, i.e., when the New Zealand sportscaster/interviewer POINTEDLY asked him, “Tiger you always state that it’s FAMILY FIRST, and GOLF SECOND: Will it ALWAYS be that way” ??? And Tiger looked him straight in the eye and replied “YES ABSOLUTELY” . He is a LYING, CONNIVING, NARCISSIST, who ONLY cares about HIMSELF and HIS MONEY, HIS STUFF, HIS FEELINGS and so on… If someone would have CHEATED on HIM, on the GOLFCOURSE he would have been the first to throw a huge temper tantrum , as WITNESSED in various videos. But he seems to think it’s “ok” to cheat on and betray his wife and children, with NOT ONE, NOT TWO, but 10 to 14 low-class prostitutes, fame-whores and scatterbrained skanks ??? His wife is probably scared to death that she and her young children may now have some type of venereal disease, HIV, or worse…. THIS is NOT “OK” to jeopardize the health, emotional well being and physical safety of your spouse AND children. He is the first to “point the finger” and criticize Michael Vicks for not coming out PUBLICLY and apologizing for what he did, and yet Tiger has been a FULL-ON COWARD and has been IN HIDING for 3 WEEKS RUNNING. Posting a short, trite, ’sorry I did some transgressions’ on his website, is NOT coming forward, NOR going public and admitting the ridiculous, offensive, skanky crap that he has put everyone thru, and mostly his wife and kids. HIDING in seclusion, SNEAKING around incognito, and SLITHERING around at dark like a snake, is NOT ‘MAN-ING-UP’ and taking the heat for everything he has done to cause pain, embarrassment, and humiliation to so many people though mainly his own family. People have apparently yet to ‘figure out’ that he ONLY makes 90 MILLION a YEAR on his endorsements BECAUSE he has CONNED PEOPLE into BELIEVING that he is an honest guy, devoted husband and father, family man, who happens to be ‘good’ at playing golf - - - “So BUY MY PRODUCTS, MAKE ME RICHER FOLKS” …… And everyone runs like cows to the slaughter …. Maybe Tag Heuer, Gillete, Accenture and the rest of them should have Lucifer the Devil as their NEXT spokesman, because HE is ‘good’ at ‘convincing people of things’ as well …. STAND UP AMERICA and quit making FEEBLE EXCUSES, for weak, one-minded guys who put their wife and kids at risk, all for a piece of ass. Something is terribly wrong with anyone who cannot see this …

Later tonight would be 3 weeks since I had the accident which triggered an onslaught of negative publicity which are more fiction than reality. I did have a few transgressions but nothing close to the number that had been banded around.. On Thanksgiving day one of my transgressions text messaged me while Elin and I were having dinner. One thing led to another and the next thing I knew was my cellphone flying at me , hitting me and causing a bloody lip.Realizing that my wife Elin was too upset and irrational I thought the best ting was to leave the house so she could calm down. While I was driving out of the driveway, I noticed that Elin was whacking away at my car windows, that distraction was enough to cause me to crash hitting a fire hydrant then a tree. I bumped my head and was knocked out . When I came to I realized that Elin had pulled me out of the car and had someone called 911. That is all i have to say on the accident. As to the women, yes, I did give in to temptation. I am not making excuses but while on tour the amount of beautiful girls hanging around everywhere is unbelievable. They are always there offering everything anywhere anytime. I fought it for many years especially when my dad was around but I finally succumbed to the weakness of the flesh. Yes I transgressed with maybe 5 or 6 different women. Yes, I have done wrong , I have embarrassed my wife and family and my business partners and all my loyal fans. I beg your forgiveness. Please give me and my family some privacy so we can work things out. I would still like to salvage my marriage and bring up my kids.Thank you. Tiger Woods

@ FBI … your words are some of the best that I’ve read yet about this saga, which indeed began three weeks ago tonight … whoever you are, I tip my hat to you …

For me, the final straw with Tiger came this past summer, while watching the AT&T at Congressional on TV. There at the front of the gallery, was a young veteran in a wheelchair, missing both his arms and legs … a true hero, if ever there was one. And so along comes Anthony Kim and Tiger Woods, as they were paired together in the final group. While Kim reached over and gave the young man an encouraging pat, Woods merely strode past, fully engrossed in all his self-worth, without offering so much as a wink to the poor guy. Perhaps to some, that meant nothing ? To me however, it spoke volumes about what this man is truly all about … and even worse, it is so sad how we put people like him and his ilk, on such high pedestals.

I have apologized to everyone and now I am trying to work things our with my wife but all these false news articles about our impending divorce and Elin leaving for Sewden are not helping. I am asking the press and the public to please back off and let us work this problem out on our own time.
I am also hurt by the comments that I ignored wounded vets at my most recent AT&T tournament. That is so far from the truth. As some poster indicated, I did give out 30,000 tickets so these vets could attend the event. During the course of the 4 day event I tried to acknowledge as many of these fine heroes as I could but you have to realize that we are “on the clock” so it is not possible for me to address every one of these 30,000 vets. .I did as my custom, present the winning ball to a vet, this year it was to a fine young soldier who lost hands and feet in his duty to the country. My father was in the military, the marines, and I have always praised the armed forces. They are the folks which make it possible for all of us to play golf in peace. If I did not greet everyone of those 30,000 vets I invited to the tournament, I apologize. And once again I apologize for my transgressions and beg for your forgiveness. Sincerely yours Tiger Woods

Wait till the fans heckle him, and big ass Steve want to fight them all, Woods can’t handle any distraction on the course, I would expect him to loose more and more. When he is heckled like Montey.

Even without the heckling Monty couldn’t win to save his life. True, there will be more heckling but there are rules to control that. Tiger & Stevie will be prepared for some additional distraction but Tiger has that ability to tune things out. Some people think that is arrogance, It is just Tiger in his “Zone”. I believe Tiger’s payback is to win and win some more. I predict he will get his 18th major within the next 12-18 months. Then Accenture , Tag will beg to get back on board.

    To “FBI” and his/her fans:

“…IMAGE he ATTEMPTED to CREATE FOR HIMSELF - of great athlete, squeaky-clean husband and father, family man, etc.”

He is a great athlete, and a family man who has his share of marital problems. The only image he actually portrayed was/is of a great golfer. Anything else, the public judged, and conjured up.

“…skanky crap that he has put everyone thru, and mostly his wife and kids…”

I’m sorry he’s putting you through soooo much anguish and heartache. So sorry. Ok, put down that tabloid.

(btw, correction “skanky crap he put his wife and kids thru”)

Get a life, and then maybe you’ll be able to empathise.

If he was a serial killer or pedophile, then that would be of great concern to the public. But this (while disturbing to hear) is a personal matter that should be left to him and his wife ONLY! Well, and the courts.

I am a religious zealot and somewhat of a bigot.
I have always believed Tiger Woods, despite his skills, should not be playing golf with the likes of Phil Mickleson and Ernie Els. All his earnings and possessions gained from golf are undeserved, this includes his Swedish wife. Like so many others I had these reasons to resent Tiger Woods so this incident with his extramarital affairs finally gives me the perfect platform to publicly lash out at him. So I am taking full advantage of the opportunity to express my righteous indignation and damn him. Let’s take away everything he has and put him where he belongs - off the course. That would make me so happy. God Bless.

Well said Anonymous Hater … the aldulterous ways of Tiger Woods indeed have absolutely “no bearing” on our own personal lives and is positively “none” of our business, as the Tiger Lovers keep reminding us. We know that. But as you’ve pointed out, what these recent revelations have done, is to confirm what so many of us had already come to realize well before … that Tiger Wood’s “greatness” as a golfer, is in sharp contrast to his “lack of greatness” as a person. Even the Tiger Lovers know in their hearts, that it’s wrong to spit all over the sacred ground that is Augusta … or to constantly stand in the sight lines of a playing partner, or to curse in the presence of young children, or to be unwilling to conclude interviews with a simple “you’re welcome” .. etc .. etc .. etc. I would submit that that is the reason why this man has managed to garner so much resentment. He may very well end up breaking all the records in the end … but his utter lack of basic decency, will ultimately prevent him from ever being held in the same light, as the true greats of the game.

You hit the nail on the head Clooney, I also noticed that incident at the ATT, and what about the kids the most inicent and the most hurt, you can tell in this culture and society who is the most inicent by how much of a victim they are and Elin is also very much a victim I am sure she wants the world to stop so she can get off. Elin is a dream girl to most of us men, and look what TW does to her and the kids thats right the kids. He should have spent the time with the kids instead of with the stupid girls. Don’t be ashamed Elin for you did nothing wrong, but make a poor choice of men.

One Questions, who does tiger need to appoligize to. Where any of you married to the man? Did he cheat on you? How dare any of you to be judgemental of this man. The entire affair is entirely between him and his wife, that’s all. Tiger doesn’t owe the public a darn thing, especially not a apology. All self rightous, judgemental so and so, should get off your high horses. i wonder how many you have something in your closet, that you’ve done, that you don’t want anyone to know about. The Big difference is, nobody would care. My thing is nobody could truely beat the man on the golf course, so now you beat him down in the media. How dare the black man, become something so great in his life. My, my, my, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Look, what Woods did isn’t a big deal. It’s his personal life and he is intitled to do what he wants granted it’s within the law. As for being a professional that was completed wiped away after seeing how he handled this whole scandle. He’s acting like a little kid trying to hide and think this problem will go away by itself. Look Tiger be a man and not a little pussycat. Fess up to what you did and in 3 months most people will forget. You just better pray that someone else has a bigger scandle so your’s gets out of the public eye faster.

if woods would just live off of his pga winnings, no problem with doing the hos. the problem stems from his acceptance of large sums of money for his image and being a role model to young kids. he does owe them some responsibility for his actions. the only ones i feel sorry for are his kids …. having to grow up with this being brought up to them everyday for the rest of their lives. his wife’s laywers will make sure she gets her money, so no sympathy there. maybe woods and john daly will have a casablanca moment …. this is the begininng of a beautiful friendship.

I don’t care who he slept with and you are all right, it is none of our business. However, he hung Fuzzy Thurston out to dry when one comment from him could have put an end to a joke. Maybe tasteless, but a joke. His adultry says a lot about his character but if the stories about asking for comp food and never tipping service personnel are true, he does not have bad character, just no character at all. If he didn’t play golf there would be a bounty on him. Spoiled, arrogant and chep to boot

Deeze2009 and Hallesy, FBI and Belo, Haki and Clooney, Blomfeldt and LaFontaine your comments make so much sense, are based on REALITY and knowing simple things like RIGHT from WRONG. Things that most Americans appear to have forgotten … Anyway you slice it, a man (whether he is a Pro-Golfer or Santa Claus) who cheats, lies, betrays, manipulates, sneaks, embarasses and humiliates his wife and children and leaves them open to venereal diseases from 9 to 14 whores and prostitutes (prostitution is STILL illegal in appox. 48 states, remember ???) is NO MAN in my book. If you’re THAT unhappy with your beautiful, intelligent wife and 2 kids, then get a DIVORCE; much smarter idea than destroying your wife and kids, losing millions, ruining your reputation, and having your sponsors drop you like flies, since afterall, most huge popular corporations DON’T WANT a lying, cheating, zero-integrity, phony-baloney-image adulterer representing THEIR products. FBI was right; why not just get Lucifer the Devil; he’s just as good at “convincing people” of things too… Crapping all over your family will NEVER be ‘acceptable’ no matter how great of a golfer you are.

Have to agree with Deezel2009, Bryan’s comment appears to be a few cards short of a full deck. Don’t know how old this kid is, but apparently still can’t differentiate RIGHT from WRONG. He erroneously states that “he doesn’t owe the public a damn thing”. Well guess what soup-for-brains: When ‘that public’ swallows your lying-phonied-up image of ‘integrity, honesty, squeaky clean good husband and father’ that YOU yourself have created with your phony answers at interviews, and assorted other lies, and YOU are receiving 60 to 70 MILLION from ‘that public’ who is duped into thinking your such a man of good character, the all-american-guy that they are spending their hard-earned money on YOUR endorsements that you are raking in the 60 to 70 million from, YOU DO owe them an apology. Frauds, phonies, adulterers and conmen, will NEVER be in style.
