2004 RED SOX USED BLUTO & CO. TO HELP BASH YANKEES: As the Red Sox face the threat of elimination on Thursday, Terry Francona may want to loosen his team up with a toga party:
The CHICAGO TRIBUNE learns what kept the 2004 Boston squad relaxed when they were down 3 games to 0 to the hated Yankees: John Belushi.
The Sox skipper says he remembers walking into the clubhouse before Game 4, and seeing his players’ eyes glued to the film “Animal House”:
“Watching [John] Belushi [break] a guitar, I was thinking it was sort of appropriate.”
The cinema spectacle of smashing Stephen Bishop’s strings somehow inspired the Sawx to streak to an ALCS win over New York, and to their first World Series trophy since 1918.
Seems like before Thursday’s Game 5, Terry needs to break out Bluto’s stirring speech:
“Over? Did you say ‘over’? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell, no! And it ain’t over now! ‘Cause when the going gets tough……………………….the tough get going!“
