Michelle Wie made a quick climb through the amateur ranks, qualifying for the prestigious women’s tournament affectionately known as “The Publinks.”
Wie’s record as the youngest qualifier for that event will be broken this week by a fellow Hawai’ian, 10-year-old Allisen Corpuz. Allisen, who broke 70 in a tournament at age 9, shot an 80 to earn the “first alternate” spot for the event. From the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL:
When Cyd Okino, the medalist from that qualifier, qualified to play in the Women’s U.S. Open (June 26-29 in Edina, Minn.), Allisen took her spot in the Women’s Public Links Tournament, which tees off this morning at Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin, [Wisconsin].
Allisen’s wish for her fourth birthday was to play golf with her dad and brother.
“She wanted to play with us when she was 3, but I told her she was too little,” Marcos said of his daughter. “When she got to be 4, I gave her a club and turned her loose.
“She’s been playing ever since.”
Allisen, who likes to read books about fantasy and adventure, likely will have a tall tale to tell when this week is over. Facing the sprawling beast also known as Erin Hills, which will be shorn down to manageable 6,178 yards for the women, the title of her story could be “The Princess and the Monster of Erin.”
Allisen says her goal is just to have fun. As for her fellow Hawai’ian, Corpuz is no fan:
“Michelle Wie wasn’t very nice to the kids at the tournament,” Marcos said. “She didn’t seem to want to be around them, so she definitely is not Allisen’s role model.
“Allisen likes Morgan Pressel because she was much friendlier with the kids. She let all the kids take pictures with her.”
Also on Allisen’s list of “likes” is math “because it’s simple.”Allisen, who just finished the fourth grade, has no interest in dolls.
“I don’t have time (for dolls) and besides, I’m too old for that.”
I like that these girls are finally going out and getting jobs. Most girls her age are already planning their weddings. This tournament will serve more to laying the foundation for a promising career; she really has no chance to win.
Marcos would do well to learn from the example that Wie has set (or lack thereof), and take Allisen’s career a bit more slowly.
